“I am praying not only for these disciples, but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message” (John 17:20 NLT).
If you’re as old as me, you likely know what it feels like to be overlooked. Getting older shrinks our world. Our strength isn’t what it used to be. I begin to wonder whether my best years are behind me. Then, John 17:20 addresses that fear with something almost unbelievable: before the cross, Jesus prayed for me — and for you!
Jesus Prayed for Every Believer
That night in the garden, His focus was upon the disciples, but that prayer reached far beyond the first century into all eternity! Into today! Can you imagine? Remember our thought from last week, where Paul reminded us that before Jesus created the world, He loved us and chose us in Christ, to be holy and without blame? Now, John recounts Jesus’ words, that he prayed for you — and for me. For every person who would ever believe in Him through the message of those with Him that night.
He Had Us in Mind Before We Were Born
Whether we’re wrestling with questions of usefulness or legacy, health problems or unmet expectations, this prayer of Jesus is one more reminder that we were on His heart before we were born!
We can look back on decisions — good or bad — as parents or in careers, and be assured that from ages ago, He had us in mind. From before we were even born! It doesn’t matter if we’ve been “fruitful” or whether we’ve failed and gotten back up again. It doesn’t even matter if we’re still broken and faithless and troubled.
Lord Jesus, thank You for never forgetting me. Thank You that before the cross, You prayed for every single person who would believe, and that includes me. Help me live with faith, humility, and courage. Make me useful in the lives of others, and give me the grace to finish well for Your glory.
